Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper has said funding opportunites from the European banks could help the expansion of the univeristy at Magee.
He made the remark after it was revealed that the University of Ulster’s new Belfast campus could be part-financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to the tune of £150m.
“I raised the need for the University of Ulster (UU) to explore European funding at Derry City Council last week. Sinn Féin Minister for Education has given the UU preferred bidder status for the former Foyle College lands. I believe that the UU should also be exploring all options on this European initiative by attempting to access similar funding for expansion of the Magee campus.
“The people of the Northwest have united in their call for Magee expansion. The lack of current spaces means that many Derry students have no choice but to study in other cities with many never returning here following graduation.”
