The expansion of the University of Ulster’s Magee campus can still go ahead despite budget cuts, Sinn Fein’s Maeve McLaughlin has insisted.
Sinn Fein, she says, has worked to secure a more favourable budget settlement than that originally proposed for the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL).
“That enhanced settlement has particular implications for Derry and the ambition for further expansion at Magee,” she said. “Under the original, DEL was facing a 12.8% cut but that has now been reduced to 10.8% which equates to an additional £15m. £3m. of that has been specially ring fenced for the universities... In that context, the planned expansion of Magee can still go ahead providing the political will is there from the Minister and the UU hierarchy.”
