An Assembly motion that could have granted Derry’s Magee campus an extra 1000 undergraduate places has been defeated at Stormont.
A total of 49 MLAs voted against the motion while 27 were in favour.
Derry’s MLAs had urged Stormont colleagues to vote for the motion.
Speaking yesterday, Sinn Fein’s Raymond McCartney said that the expansion of the Magee campus is essential to the North West regional regeneration plan, while the SDLP’s Pat Ramsey said the huge demand for student places at Magee “must be addressed immediately”.
