A petition in support of the expansion of the university at Magee will be presented to the Assembly at Stormont this morning.
The petition, which has been taken up across the north west as well as attracting thousands of signatures online, will be delivered to the Assembly at the opening of business this morning by Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin.
It has already attracted the support of the local Chamber of Commerce and university lobby group, U4D.
As well as receiving support in Derry, the petition has also received cross border support with people in Donegal adding their voice to the campaign to expand the university.
Donegal Sinn Féin Donegal Councillor Jack Murray said; “We are pleased to support the petition for the expansion of Magee University. Enhanced educational facilities in Derry and towns like Letterkenny make the North West region a far more attractive area to bring inward investment and maximising all that flows from that.
“Derry, and particularly areas such as the Inishowen peninsula, are stilling living with the legacy of partition and that is something we must always be trying to address.”
Derry City Councillor Colly Kelly also backed the petition. “I feel that more moves should be made to increase co-operation between educational institutions in Derry and Donegal and, indeed across all border areas,” he said.
