An elderly gentleman suffered injuries in a “distressing” assault at Lisfannon, near Buncrana on Thursday afternoon during which two men attempted to take his vehicle.
The attack occurred at approximately 5.45pm and Gardai believe it may be linked to an earlier incident at Lisfannon beach on the same day.
Garda Superintendent Eugene McGovern told the Journal that one man was arrested in relation to the incident and is due to appear at Buncrana District Court on April 28th.
The second man escaped and is currently being sought by Gardai.
Superintendent McGovern commended members of the public who assisted them, adding that without their help, Gardai “would not have got the result” they did.
He said Gardai believe the incident is linked to an earlier occurrence at Lisfannon beach at approximately 4pm, involving a white Subaru Impreza saloon, which was subject to seizure by Gardai.
It is believed the two men in this vehicle were involved in the attack on the elderly man, which occurred further along the Derry to Buncrana road, near Buncrana town. It is understood they assaulted him while attempting to take his vehicle.
The beach was particularly busy on Thursday afternoon and Superintendent McGovern appealed for anyone with information on the earlier incident to contact Gardai at the Buncrana station.
Superintendent McGovern said that while the elderly gentleman, who is believed to be in his 80s, did not suffer any serious injuries, the incident was “distressing.”
He again commended two members of the public who came to the man’s assistance, adding that their help “may well have saved the gentleman from more serious injuries.”
