Defeated Sinn Fein Westminster candidate for Foyle, Gearóid Ó hEára, congratulated SDLP opponent, Mark Durkan, on his re-election to Westminster in the early hours of Friday morning.
Despite being tipped to increase Sinn Fein’s vote in Foyle, Mr. Ó hEára, saw the vote for his party in Foyle decline by 419 votes from 2010.
In his speech, Mr. Ó hEára, addressed the recent spate of attacks on Sinn Fein elected representatives and activists by dissident republicans in the run-up to the election.
“First of all I would like to congratulate Mark [Durkan] on his achievement and I wish him very well for the future and I would like to congratulate all of the other candidates and commend them for their campaigns.”
Mr. Ó hEára added: “I would like to especially speak to our campaign team - this election was very, very hard. We worked tirelessly throughout and there was great humour and I was really impressed with how young people got involved.
“I am particularly pleased that the Sinn Fein vote has held up and I want to send a message to all of those people in the constituency who came out and voted for Sinn Fein - we’ve held our vote, we’ve consolidated and we will build on that for the next time.”
