Derry council received just nine car noise complaints from angry citizens

Just nine complaints about noisy vehicles were made to Derry City & Strabane District Council last year.

The council revealed the level of consternation about loud cars in response to a Freedom of Information request.

While the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act (NI) 2011 allows councils to investigate noise which is giving rise to complaint, road vehicle and traffic noise is generally considered a matter for the PSNI or Transport NI.

Council can, however, impose statutory nuisance notices for noisy dogs, music, TVs, parties, DIY, house alarms, construction sites, entertainment, factories, wind farms, farms and street performers.

Non-compliance with the notices can lead to fines of up to £5,000.
