‘Dog fouling remains a serious issue’ - DCC

Derry City Council says it is committed to tackling the problem of dog fouling despite only one fixed penalty notice (FPN) being issued in the city last year.

Derry City Council’s Karen Phillips said there were more than 200 dog foul bins in the city and that the local authority actively highlights to dog owners “that they are responsible for cleaning up after their pet.”

She said it was difficult to enforce legislation because “wardens must witness a person permitting their dog and failing to clean up after it.”

In 2012/13 only one FPN was issued by Derry City Council, compared to 189 in Belfast.
