The Glendermott parish has launched a period of preparation for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, which will take place in Dublin next year.
The Waterside parish will host 33 weeks of preparation and prayer ahead of the major event, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors.
It will involve special Masses, Adoration, and a system of dedicating Masses for special intentions during the period of preparation.
Fr Roland Colhoun from the parish said; “Our parish is beginning to prepare in a very particular way for the Congress. We are inviting you to undertake an hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament every week, on any day and time of your own choosing, for thirty-three weeks. The programme commences this week and ends on the final week, on the Feast of Corpus Christi next June, when the Eucharistic Congress itself is initiated.”
Explaing how the period of preparation will work, Fr Colhoun said; “The priests of the parish will celebrate one Mass every week until June 2012, offered specifically for the well-being of all those who fill in a card and undertake the 33 weeks of Adoration. In other words, if you can dedicate an hour every week to Adoration, you will receive the blessings of a Mass every week for your intentions.”
A rota for adoration is already in place but Fr Colhoun said more are welcome. “If you have not yet joined this weekly rota, we would be delighted to have your participation, so that you would sign up to some definite hour on the rota, in one of our four churches every week. But if you are not able to commit to a specific hour, please sign up to do an hour at some indefinite time every week. Either way, you will be preparing for the Eucharistic Congress in a Eucharistic way.
