A one off temporary funding of £3.8m from the Health Care Board to the Western Trust means it can work towards its goal of breaking even financially this year.
Lesley Mitchell, director of Finance and Contracting with the Western Trust said that without the extra payment it was projected they’d end the financial year with a deficit.
She said the Trust had also been challenged by the cost of medical locums and the increased number of “looked after” children by the Board.
“The board has also offered us £1m to address these issues,” she said.
Trust chairman Gerard Guckian welcomed the extra money saying that it wasn’t just about addressing the problem but understanding the problem.
“The case has been made and acknowledged,” he said.
