Hundreds of families in Derry are being forced to choose between paying their mortgage or feeding their families a nutritious dinner, a local charity has warned.
Foyle Foodbank who have just launched their second citywide drive to ensure that noone in Derry goes hungry this Christmas, say this is a choice no family should have to make.
“More and more people are in need of assistance” said John McMonagle, Chairperson of the Foodbank. He said that many of those who use the foodbank are faced with the daily painful choice of deciding between necessities.
“With the pressures of winter and Christmas, we anticipate the demand for emergency food to grow and are asking for help from the public,” he said.
Foodbank are asking businesses, schools and community groups and workplaces will take on the challenge to support people in need in the run up to Christmas. They have specially prepared collection boxes and posters to enable a Food Drive Collection point to be easily set up in your premises on dates to suit your group, and once full, volunteers from the Foodbank will come and uplift the donations before processing it and getting it to those in need.
