Famine Walk to take place on Wednesday

“Walking With Spirit” is the theme for this year’s Famine commemoration walk in Derry.

The walk leader will be Linda Ervine, an Irish language advocate from East Belfast.

The walk begins at Guildhall Square at 4pm on Wednesday, September 21. The cross-community event coincides with International Peace Day.

It will proceed across the Peace Bridge to the old workhouse in the Waterside.

Further activities will follow at St. Columb’s Park House.

“We are excited to have Linda Ervine as this year’s walk leader and grateful to St. Columb’s Park House for helping us plan this unique event” said Maire Nic Fhearraigh, a walk organiser.

“Everyone is invited to come along,” she added.

A Choctaw heirloom squash will be presented to St. Columbs Park House as a symbol of food sovereignty by walk organiser Waylon Gary White Deer, a Choctaw Indian.

In 1847, the Choctaw people donated $170 from “meager resources” to help feed victims of An Gorta Mor, Ireland’s Great Hunger.

The walk is being sponsored by Action from Ireland and Concern Worldwide.
