FARC says McGuinness was a '˜revolutionary' and friend of the Colombian people
The leadership of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army (FARC-EP) has described Martin McGuinness as an example of the 'revolutionary struggle for peace, social justice, solidarity, and internationalism'.
The former guerrilla movement, which, like Mr. McGuinness before it, navigated a long and protracted transition from war to peace, said he was an inspiration.
In a tribute, the Central High Command of the FARC-EP stated: “During his lifetime, Martin worked tirelessly to achieve peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. He was an inspiration for many people, always committed to the struggle of his peoples.
“As a member of Sinn Féin he was closely associated with the search of peace in Colombia, demonstrating his immense and disinterested solidarity with the people of Colombia. Three years ago he visited Colombia, getting to know about our realities and showing great interest in conveying the experiences of the peace process in Northern Ireland. For all this, our eternal gratitude.
“The guerrillas, the Central High Command of the FARC-EP and its Secretariat send our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends and his Sinn Féin comrades. Martin is an example of the revolutionary struggle for peace, social justice, solidarity, and internationalism.”
