Football tournament in honour of friends

A group of young people from Strathfoyle will host a football tournament in honour of two of their friends Paddy Kelly and James Bradley who both died recently.

The football tournament will take place on Friday April 22 at Strathfoyle Youth Centre.

There will be two different age categories; 16 to 18 years and 18 to 25 years.

The deaths of Paddy and James impacted greatly on the Strathfoyle community.

Many of James’ and Paddy’s friends came up with the idea of the football tournament as a way to honour their late friends and promote positive messages throughout the Strathfoyle area.

Money raised at the tournament will be donated to a variety of local charities.

There will also be a variety of different events taking place in the community on the day of the football tournament.

There will be entertainment and food.

James Bradley died as a result of testicular cancer in June 2010; he was only 18 years-old.

Paddy Kelly passed away in hospital in early 2015 after he was retrieved from the River Foyle.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ in 2012, James Bradley’s father said he could not have asked for a better son.

“I don’t think Jimmy could have asked for better set of friends. These fellas are second to none and they have had my blessing for everything they’ve done.

“A football match is a fitting tribute to Jimmy as he was football crazy. Honestly, he just lived and breathed the sport.”

Friends of the two young me have organised events in their honour every year since their deaths.

Last year a boxing tournament took place in Strathfoyle with all of the money going towards local charities.
