'˜Forever Young' themed St Patrick's Day party will fall on a Friday and have £86,500 budget

Derry's St Patrick's Day party, which falls on a Friday next year, conveniently, will have a '˜Forever Young' theme and an overall budget of £86,500.

In a report to the Council’s Business and Culture Committee, Council Head of Culture, Aeidin McCarter, told members the 2016 St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival attracted audiences of 35,000 and the local authority hoped to build on this in 2017. She said the theme for 2017 will be ‘Forever Young’ and the programme will include the annual carnival, as well as linking in with the Legenderry Food Festival and Ubuntu Global Festival .

The report was welcomed by Brian McMahon of Sinn Féin, who said he hoped the Tourist Board would use it to promote the city, and John Boyle of the SDLP, who welcomed the multi-cultural aspect and suggested a weekend-falling festival could be even bigger success than last year.
