Formal identification to be made by end of next week

The family of missing Derry man, John Concannon, will have to wait just one more week until the results of tests carried out on human remains discovered on the Lenamore Road last Saturday come back from laboratory analysis.

The ‘Journal’ understands a post-mortem and additional testing concluded on Wednesday.

The results of the tests are not expected back until the latter stages of next week, however.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed: “A post mortem and a number of other tests have been carried out on the human remains that were discovered in the Lenamore Road area on Saturday, March 11.

“Police await the results of the tests before a formal identification can be made.”

Mr. Concannon, aged 71 when he went missing on November 10, 2015, was last seen getting off the Fernabbey bus just a few hundred yards away from where the human remains were discovered on Saturday.

Mr. Concannon’s family are almost certain the remains belong to their lost loved one, however, they now await the conclusion of the formal identification process. His brothers Leon and Michael both confirmed the body recovered in a stream near the border last week bore both a checked shirt and watch, Mr. Concannon was wearing at the time of his disappearance.

Both have thanked the volunteers and supporters who have assisted the Concannons during what has been a 16 month nightmare for the family.
