A freak accident almost resulted in former Derry City striker, Kevin McHugh, losing a finger.

McHugh, who now plays for Finn Harps, was taking part in a coaching session in Donegal when his wedding ring caught on a fence.

The Donegal born footballer Tweeted a GRAPHIC IMAGE of the injury.

Remarkably, 36 year-old McHugh drove himself to Letterkenny General Hospital but was transferred to Galway University Hospital to undergo surgery.

The former Linfield player Tweeted a picture of himself from his hospital bed and said Twitter was keeping him “calm”.

McHugh developed a strong partnership with the late Mark Farren when the pair played at Brandywell and scored several key goals during his time as a ‘Candy Stripe’.
