Fourth break- in at Ballymagroarty Primary School

The principal of an Irish language primary school has told the '˜Journal' he is disgusted after the school was broken into last Thursday night.

Oisín Mac Eochaidh of Gaelscoil na Daróige said the intruders entered the school on the Coshquin Road through a fence, ripped off the grill on the primary one classroom and then smashed the glass. They then stole a laptop from inside.

“We are so disappointed and disheartened that this has happened again,” said Mr. Mac Eochaidh, revealing that this is fourth break-in at the school in recent months.

“We have told the board that the school needs a proper fence but nothing has been done. I’ve patched up the fence with what I can find but we need a proper fence to secure the school or this will keep happening.

“We keep asking for a fence and we are told that we need to get reports done, but nothing has happened.”

He said that staff at the school were particularly distressed about this most recent break in because the intruders managed to get inside a classroom.

“Once they had the grill off they threw a brick at the window to break the glass,” he said. “It makes us so angry.

“This isn’t just an attack on the school, it’s an attack on the children and learning, it is an attack on the community.

“It’s a horrible thought to think that this has happened.”

It’s understood that the two intruders have been caught on CCTV.

Police are investigating.
