Frankie McMenamin said that the iconic Bogside monument should remain relevant to current affairs and social justice issues in the world today.

He was speaking in response to an editorial on the matter in the ‘Derry Journal’ which argued that political messages daubed on to the wall itself could detract from what it stands for and its impact, including for tourists who have travelled to visit it.

Speaking after posting some ‘Dump Trump’ posters on the wall recently, Mr McMenamin said:“I believe people have a right to put what they want to on the Wall to get their message across.

“It is a monument but it is a living monument that can be used for the people of Derry and those outside Derry.

“It gives ordinary people - people who maybe don’t know how to use the media - the chance to get their message across. They are not doing it to destroy the wall.

“It belongs to the people and the people of Derry are very politicised and very aware of what’s going on in the world and interested in injustices affecting other people.

“Civil rights issues are still ongoing around the world- it doesn’t just relate to what happened over the last 40 years but what’s happening now as well,” he added.
