Two large A1-sized posters, replicated from the Derry Journal’s front page on Tuesday, have been pasted under the ‘You Are Now Entering Free Derry’ text.

The poignant tribute appeared this morning as mourners were gathering a short distance away at St Eugene’s Cathedral to say a final farewell to the ‘People’s Bishop’.

Bishop Daly will be forever associated and venerated for his role during Bloody Sunday in the Bogside on January 30, 1972.

As well as being a spiritual leader and a friend to thousands in Derry, he also dedicated himself to campaigning for justice, advancing social and economic conditions for people across the city and helping to unite communities and bring about peace.

Thousands are expected to attend Requiem Mass this afternoon, with the service set to get under way at 3.30pm.
