Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is hosting a free information day in Derry today about the new Fire Safety Legislation and how it will impact on all non-domestic premises in Northern Ireland.
The information day will last from 11am to 3pm on Tuesday, December 7 at Crescent Link Fire Station, 10 Crescent Link and presentations will be given on the hour every hour. Everyone is welcome to attend to talk to their local Firefighters about the new Fire Safety Legislation and there is no need to pre book places.
The new change in Fire Safety Legislation came into effect on Monday 15 November 2010 and seeks to replace and simplify existing fire safety legislation in a non-domestic premises using a modern risk based approach to fire prevention.
Put simply, it means that any person who has some level of control in premises must take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and make sure people can safely escape if there is a fire. This will in most instances have to be recorded within a Fire Risk Assessment.
Mark Deeney, Derry District Commander, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said: “I would encourage premises owners, employers and anyone with responsibility for fire safety in a non-domestic premises, to come along to our information day to learn more about the changes to Fire Safety Legislation, and how this will ultimately affect them.”
