From the archive: Guildhall bombing attracts widespread condemation - January 1978
The revulsion felt among all sections of Derry citizens when in the summer of 1972 a double attack by Provisional I.R.A. bombers wrecked the people's Guildhall, has burst out afresh when after years of patient repair and restoration at the city hall at a cost of £1,250,000 in public money the bombers struck again on Friday morning.
Although the small bomb planted in the Minor Hall on the occasion of Thursday night’s dance did not do as much damage as the large bombs taken into the building in June, 1972, the public were shocked at the fact that it should have happened again.
It came just after the Mayor’s successful project of offering a Guildhall “open week” to let the Derry public become aware that their centre of culture was again available, and big numbers were indeed attracted to one or other of the functions that were run during the course of the week.
