The Derry Resident Magistrate, Mr. Patrick Maxwell, is to retire at the end of this month, completing close on fifty years of prominent identification with the political and legal life of Derry, and, as he said himself, breaking a link with the law going back for over a century.

At Derry Court yesterday tributes were paid to Mr. Maxwell, and replying to them he said it was a great source of gratification to hear such tributes and regrets at his leaving the Bench.

On his elevation in 1968 he was welcomed in that court and it was probably fitting that the present occasion occurred in the same place.

Everyone had been more than kind and he should like to thank all those there and also the great number of people who had been good enough to express regret at his retiring and had conveyed to me their good wishes.
