The completion of the project was marked by a family fun day at the Curragh Road centre on Saturday. Facilities include a gym, sports hall, and a floodlit 3g pitch. Ollie Mullan, Sport and Community Facilities Manager for the area, said they’re keen to “maximise the potential of the new outdoor synthetic pitch, which is a great asset for the area”, and working with local clubs to address the need in the area.”

Sinn Féin Colr. Sean McGlinchey is delighted it’s open, but said there are issues outstanding, including an official name which needs to be considered by the council. He said the centre “still falls short of what’s needed” according to a 2012 consultation of leisure facilities required for the area. He said ratepayers have paid no money towards the facility so far, and the council still has a duty to provide facilities in the area, including ladies’ football and camogie facilities.
