Gardai in Inishowen are on the hunt for the driver of a silver Mini in the Moville area following a crash in the main street on Sunday afternoon.

The one vehicle collision happened when, it is believed, the driver of the car lost control and crashed into The Point Cafe in the centre of the town around 5pm on Sunday.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ yesterday Supt. Kevin English from Buncrana Gardai said the driver lost control of the vehicle and then left the scene of the incident.

However Supt. English said Gardai locally are following a “definite line of inquiry” into the identity of the driver.

“The car made contact with a building and caused slight damage to the business premises.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the accident to contact Moville Garda Station immediately on 074 93 82002.”

An eyewitness told the ‘Journal’ the accident caused a degree of “chaos” in Moville on the busy afternoon.

“There was loads of people around watching, and it caused a bit of traffic disruption. There has been damage done to the cafe, but thankfully no pedestrians were hurt in the collision, however it could have been a very different story.”

The witness said the accident caused quite a stir in Moville.

“Although I didn’t see the accident itself the impact was felt throughout the town. A car accident in Moville main street is not something that you see every Sunday. There was a lot of passers-by stopping and people were standing outside the other businesses to see what was going on.”

The Moville man praised the Gardai for their swift approach in clearing the scene.

“A local man with a tractor helped the Guards to clear the area so people could get on with every day life.

“I have to say they were quick in getting the area cleaned up and taking the car away so traffic disruption was only minimal.”
