Former Derry Deputy Mayor Gary Middleton is understood to be the front runner to succeed Maurice Devenney as DUP MLA for Foyle.
Mr. Devenney revealed last week that he was standing down as the party’s Assemblyman for Foyle after just five months in the job.
The Donegal born politician indicated that he wanted to concentrate on local issues as a member of the new Derry City & Strabane District Council.
Party leader Peter Robinson said he had enjoyed working with Mr. Devenney in the Assembly and said he wouldcontinue to serve the electorate in the NW.
The DUP said his successor would be appointed in due course.
The ‘Journal’ understands that Councillor Middleton - twice Deputy Mayor of Derry -is favourite to replace Mr. Devenney.
He was the leader of the DUP grouping on Derry City Council and represents the rural constituency.
