Derry Sinn Fein Councillor, Colly Kelly, has praised Irish charity, Trocaire, for its decision to launch a humanitarian appeal to help the people of Gaza.

Over 1000 Palestinian civilians have lost their lives since the Israeli commenced Operation Protective Edge on July 8.

As a result of the military action and the on-going economic blockade, basic food and medical supplies are running at dangerously low levels.

“There is a humanitarian disaster in Gaza as a consequence of the long standing Israeli policy of sanctions and most immediately the current Israeli assault on that region. There is a growing shortage of basic foodstuffs and fresh water because of damage to the infrastructure in Gaza. Humanitarian aid must have unhindered access to all areas of Gaza in order to provide for the population there, the local health services and aid infrastructure. Hospitals are stretched to breaking point,” said Colr. Kelly.

“There are ways people in Derry, Donegal and Tyrone can practically help. Donations can be easily made online at” he added.
