It’s time to dust off the trainers and check the training schedule, as this week sees the official launch of one of Inishowen`s most popular sporting events.
The 2015 Ardaravan Clinic Inishowen Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 22nd March and the organisers are confident 2015 will be the most successful yet.
Organised annually by Inishowen AC, the event attracts hundreds of athletes who will run, jog or even wheel along the 13.1 mile route.
Athletes of all abilities from the recreational runner to the club athletes will battle it out for pole position and a slice of the 2,000 euro prize money.
The race will follow the same course as 2014 leaving from Buncrana Leisure Centre at 12 noon and finishing on Buncrana Main Street where supporters can cheer the athletes over the line.
Speaking at the launch, Inishowen AC chairman Niall McGee said the Inishowen Half Marathon was a “fantastic family-friendly event, which sees a great turnout from aspiring and experienced local athletes, and as well as the supporters who cheer on from the sidelines.”
He also told how Inishowen has seen “such a dramatic upsurge in the number of runners hitting the pavements over the last number of years.”
He added: “Whether you are out to just complete the course or achieve a personal best, the Half Marathon poses a great challenge, no matter what your level of fitness.”
Race Director Vincent Hegarty also anticipates a great turnout for the half marathon this year.
He said: “This event has interested a lot of athletes from around the North West and beyond and we aim to make this the most successful event to date.”
Vincent urged those interested in running the event to get their entries in and start preparing for the March 22nd event.
He also appealed to the people of Inishowen to get out on the day to show their support, cheer on the athletes and help make this an event that Inishowen can be rightly proud of.
Anyone interested in running the event can log on to inishowenac.com to enter the race and also to view the Half Marathon training schedule for tips and training advice.
All participants will receive a high quality t-shirt and commemorative medal on the day.
