A FRUSTRATED Eamonn O’Kane insists he is ‘disappointed’ with Golden Boy Promotions after he was turned away from his scheduled flight to New York this afternoon due to visa problems.
The middleweight, who fights Tuerano Johnson in a world title eliminator in three weeks time in Madison Square Garden, was set to fly out this afternoon from Heathrow Airport but O’Kane and his team were unable to board the flight.
It was an embarrassing episode for ‘King Kane’ but the Banagher boxer is hoping for a speedy resolution to the mix-up as he puts the finishing touches to the biggest fight of his life which features on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin v David Lemieux pay-per-view world title showdown.
“Golden Boy were supposed to have our visas all sorted out when we got the airport and they haven’t done it,” O’Kane told the ‘Journal’
“It’s all down to Golden Boy and they have to sort it out,” he explained. “I’ll let my manager and coach, Paddy Fitzpatrick deal with it and not worry about the ‘toing and froing’ that goes on.
“I trust they are more than capable of dealing with my best interests.”
I’m disappointed in Golden Boy. They are supposed to be among the best people about in boxing and it’s disappointing that they have been so unprofessional on this occasion.Eamonn O’Kane
O’Kane’s opponent for the October 17th title eliminator in New York, former 2008 U.S. Olympian Johnson, has recently signed with Oscar De la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
And while there were suggestions on social media that the visa problems were designed to disrupt O’Kane’s preparations for the fight, the Co. Derry man stopped short of accusing Golden Boy’s mishap as being underhand.
“I’m disappointed in Golden Boy,” he said. “They are supposed to be among the best people about in boxing and it’s disappointing that they have been so unprofessional on this occasion.
“I’m in a good place right now. I’ve done everything right in preparation for this fight. Ideally we would have flown out today but hopefully we can get this resolved and get out as soon as possible to make up for it.
“I want to get out there now!”
However, O’Kane’s trainer, Fitzpatrick took to Twitter to vent his frustration claiming: ‘@KingKane11 turned back from Heathrow due to @GoldenBoyBoxing either being unproffesional [sic] or underhand #NoVisa’
While Golden Boy and O’Kane’s trainer, Fitzpatrick attempt to resolve the situation, the former Comonwealth gold medallist will return to the gym in Swindon to fine-tune his preparations while the visa issues are ironed out with Golden Boy.
“I’ll possibly go back home to Swindon and do a bit of training but we’ll wait and see what develops. I’m in the best nick of my life so I’m ready for whatever. I’m going to get out there and do everyone proud.”
The ‘Journal’ have made attempts to contact Golden Boy for a comment on the matter but, as yet, have not received a response.
