Buncrana’s Junk Kouture’s founders are hoping to win big at the Irish Green Awards this week.

Elizabeth Curran and Troy Armour have been shortlisted for three awards - Green Leaders, Green Corporate Citizens and Green Entrepreneurs at the prestigious award ceremony on Thursday night.

The achievement is one of many for the entrepreneurs, who established Junk Kouture four years ago.

The schools’ competition has been going from strength to strength since then and a record 2.563 students entered this year.

The Green Awards aim to celebrate excellence in sustainability and to encourage green best practice amongst Ireland’s organisations and individuals. These awards are a perfect fit for Junk Kouture as the competition encourages secondary level students to reuse, recycle and refashion their waste into high-end couture garments suitable for the red carpet.

This is the second year Junk Kouture has been nominated for a Green Award and its founders are feeling hopeful that they will bring at least one of the awards home with them this year.

Elizabeth explains: “It is a great acknowledgment of the work we have put in to educating teenagers about the need to think differently about waste and what they do with it. To be nominated alongside much bigger brands such as Kingspan Energy and the Musgrave Group is testament to how far Junk Kouture has come in such a short period.”

Junk Kouture, which is proudly supported by Bank of Ireland and the European Recycling Platform (ERP) this year, is gearing up for the competition’s Grand Final to be held in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on May 2nd. This event sold out in under five hours last week. Four regional finals have already taken place in theatres across the country and now eighty of the country’s most promising junk designs will take to the esteemed Bord Gais catwalk in their bid to be named Junk Kouture Champion 2014. The Irish Green Awards took place in Dublin last night.
