“Things like this are always going to happen but I hope Sky Sports correct their mistake when Northern Ireland score against Ukraine on Thursday,” declared Mr. Campbell.

“Deluded united Irelanders must have thought their day had come when they saw the mistake,” laughed the MP.

Michael O’Neill’s team made history in Nice on Sunday when they competed in their first ever game in the European Championship finals.

Northern Ireland lost 1-0 to Poland but when reporting on the result after the match had finishe,d Sky Sports used the Irish tricolour instead of the Red Hand of Ulster flag.

“This is a disgrace, I hope Sky Sports issue an apology - do they not realise how politically sensitive this issue is,” said one Northern Ireland fan.

“Sky Sports clearly know something about a United Ireland that we certainly don’t,” commented another football fan.
