It’s been runnning for 12 years and is always a popular crowd pleaser for the community and, this year, organisers of Greysteel Community Festival hope it will just be as successful.
This year, Greysteel Community Association is joining forces with Faughanvale GAA Club to give everyone attending the week-long event even more to enjoy.
Raymond O’Hara of Greysteel Community Association said the idea was to create a wider range of events.
“Hopefully we’ll get good weather because for the last few years it’s been terrible. The people still came out despite the rain, but it makes such a difference when it’s good weather,” said Mr. O’Hara.
Events kicked off last night at John McLaughlin Park with the popular “Bernie Burns Memorial Cup”, played for through the week between teams representing the four main local town-lands; Greysteel, Gortgar, Killywool and Killylane.
Tomorrow, Wednesday night, there is a table quiz in the Rising Sun Bar, while Thursday night sees the competition move to the Foyleview bar for the Pool & Darts. At 7pm on Friday 19th a treasure hunt starts from John McLaughlin Park, followed by the popular ‘Bracken’ in the club rooms at John McLaughlin Park.
On Saturday morning youth teams from local GAA clubs will compete at John McLaughlin Park for the Gavin McKinney and Paul Gurney/Damien McKinney Memorial Cups, with an open Darts competition in the Rising Sun from 1.00pm. Entry is £5 with a total prize fund of £500, and the competition is followed by entertainment provided by The Playboys.
The grand finale takes place in John McLaughlin Park on Sunday 21st August, commencing with a Cycle Race and entertainment throughout the day include “Carnival Amusements”, Side Shows and music from the Hitmen, starting at 6pm.
“The Festival’s headline act, Foreglen’s John McNicholl takes to the stage at 8.00pm to bring the curtain down on what is certain to be an enjoyable week for everyone,” said a Club spokesperson.
