Busloads of tourists visiting Grianan of Aileach in Burt are using the toilets at the nearby St Aengus’ Church due to the lack of facilities at the monument, according to a local councillor.
At this week’s Inishowen Municipal District meeting, Councillor John Ryan called for better facilities and promotion of the iconic fort, pointing out how it is “very important from a tourism perspective.”
Colr Ryan said there was regularly “traffic chaos” on the roads leading to Grianan of Aileach, particuarly when buses attempt to reach the area.
He said these buses were regularly forced to make a number of attempts to turn at a “bottleneck” on a section of the road near Burt chapel.
Councillor Ryan said this could be quite easily fixed by putting a “pipe in the shuck to allow better access.”
He asked representatives from Donegal County Council to go out to the area and determine how it can be better accessed for buses and other vehicles.
Councillor Ryan said that the lack of toilets at Grianan fort was also a “huge issue.”
He said: “Buses are coming down again and the tourists are using the toilets at Burt chapel.
“The local priest isn’t complaining or anything but I’m sure he’d rather not have 40 people getting out of a bus to use the toilets there.”
