A gun was found in the Braehead Road area of the city following a gorse fire last weekend.
The firearm was discovered on the Braehead Road, close to the scene where the body of Derry man Kieran Doherty was found in February last year. He had been shot dead by the Real IRA.
The PSNI said the gun was discovered during a gorse fire in the area last Saturday night. The police also said part of the gun had melted in the fire and that it was not possible to determine how long it had been there or whether it was in working order. The PSNI also said any link between the gun and the murder is purely speculative.
