Police are continuing to question four men arrested last night in Derry in relation to dissident republican activity.
A PSNI spokeswoman says police arrested one man, aged 23, while in a car in the Abercorn Road area at 8:20pm.
She says a “suspected rifle” was recovered from the vehicle and is currently being examined by forensic and ballistics experts.
“In an immediate follow-up operation by officers from Serious Crime Branch, three other males were arrested - two men aged 43 and 54 as well as a 16 year old youth. These men were not in the car. All four have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station for questioning,” she says.
“As part of the subsequent follow-up operation, a suspicious object was spotted in the Foyle Road area. This has been removed for further examination by ATO. There are no further details about this object at this time.”
The PSNI spokeswoman says searches are continuing in the area this morning.
“Police will work as quickly as possible and seek to keep disruption to community life to a minimum. We would ask for people’s patience and understanding as we work to ensure the area is safe and the investigation is progressed,” she says.
