Following several weeks of warm weather in late May and early June, the last few weeks have proved a wash out, with the wet weather set to continue as children across the north west start their summer holidays.

The Met Office has warned that thundery showers, and even hail could be sweeping in with the start of July.

A turbulent mix of westerly winds, heavy rain, thunder and the occasional outbreak of sunshine are also predicted for the weekend ahead as temperatures struggle to reach the average for the time of year.

South of the border, Met Eireann officials have said that spot flooding is a possibility as “scattered, heavy, blustery showers” tail off this afternoon and then return this evening.

Met Eireann is predicting that there might be a brief respite from the rain on Tuesday, only for the wet weather to return on Wednesday, and followed up on Thursday by big winds.

Over the next two weeks, the Met Office is forecasting that conditions look set to “remain on the changeable side and often rather unsettled as bands of cloud and rain try to push eastwards”, with temperatures predicted to remain on the cool side for the time of year.

Beyond that, into late July there seems little change to cheer about, as, if the forecasts prove accurate, the wettest and most unsettled conditions are forecast for the north west.
