A new guide aimed at making sure alcohol does not spoil enjoyment of people at the major City of Culture events has been launched in Derry.
‘The Festival Care Guide which has been launched by the city’s Civic Alcohol Forum with support from the Public Health Agency and Alcohol Forum Ltd (Ireland) aims to help event organisers and promoters address harmful drinking practices.
“The Festival Care Guide is a best practice toolkit empowering those involved in organising, managing and running festivals and public events. In its adoption we are supporting event organisers to ensure that all local events that use it will memorable for the right reasons.” says Eamon O’Kane, Director of Derry Healthy Cities.
The Festival Care Guide navigates event organisers through each step to help them execute a safe and memorable event including briefing key service providers and agencies, briefing of festival staff and volunteers, knowledge of the law in relation to alcohol, responsible serving of alcohol, publicising of the festival with safety messages, promotion of alcohol free family zones, recruitment of event marshals and the post-festival debrief.
Welcoming the development of the Festival Care Guide, Mayor Martin Reilly says, “I am delighted as Chair of the Civic Alcohol Forum to promote the use of this Guide and in this year of City of Culture. In particular, I would encourage all event organisers to make it a core element of their event plans.
“The Civic Alcohol Forum has always promoted a care campaign and this updated guide will motivate organisers and attendees to have a greater social consciousness around harmful drinking.”
