Local group Cúnamh will be launching a new therapy service and a series of interactive workshops on eating disorders aimed at secondary school age young people in Derry.
Financial support from the TRIAX Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership has been secured for the workshops, which aim to equip young people with information about body image, nutritional advice, signs and symptoms of eating disorders and where to seek help.
The organisation has also secured funding from Children In Need to deliver an innovative programme that will provide Early Intervention therapy for young people, as well as the provision of wider family support.
A billboard to mark Eating Disorder Week will be unveiled at Free Derry Corner this Friday.
Cathy Nelis, manager of Cúnamh said: “The long term impact on those affected can be devastating, and in some cases fatal, but we also know that intervening early, and providing the right support, information and education, is key to getting better.”
Those worried about eating disorders are encouraged to contact a GP, nurse, or Cúnamh on 02871 288868.
