Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle and Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee has welcomed engagement with Unison over the bid to tackle the issue of health inequality.
Ms. McLaughlin said the Foyle constituency was one of the worst off when it came to health inequality in the North of Ireland.
“It is important that we move our health system to a public health model that truly monitors and tackles health inequalities.
“Whilst the health of our population is improving the gap in health inequalities is increasing.
“It remains the case that health inequalities are highest in West Belfast, North Belfast and here in Foyle.”
Ms. McLaughlin went on to say that it was her party’s opinion that healthcare in the North of Ireland required investment if the issue of health inequality was to be tackled properly in the North of Ireland.
“Whilst transforming your care is a proper policy direction in terms of focusing on community or primary care it needs to be invested in with a public health agenda that targets need and provides better health outcomes,” said Ms. McLaughlin.
