Members of Derry City Council’s planning committee will decide on Tuesday whether or not to give the go-ahead for a new 61 bed private nursing home at Culmore.

SDLP Councillor for the area Angela Dobbins said she is fully supportive of the application made by nursing home owner Dr. Brendan McDonald, who owns the site on the Culmore Road and already runs a successful nursing facility in Omagh.

Colr. Dobbins said that given the threatened closure of a number of nursing homes in the city in recent months, the news is to be welcomed.

She said: “Dr Mc Donald has a proven track record of nursing homes with the flagship Slieve Na Mon Nursing Home in Omagh which has been given a gold standard award from Sterling University.

“I am delighted that Avondale will be restored to its former glory and that it will remain a residential home not only for the elderly but our elderly with dementia also. It will be an enhancement to this area and will create a much needed facility in our city.

“I have been assured that construction of the sixty-one bed nursing home will commence within weeks if given the green light at council on Tuesday,” she said.
