Sinn Féin East Derry MLA Cathal Ó hOisín chaired a meeting this week of the All Party Cancer Group (APCG) at Stormont on European Union collaboration for cancer control to new paths for sharing information and research material. Mr Ó hOisín is the Deputy Chairperson of the APCG.
Mr Ó hOisín said: “It is so important that we harmonise strategies across Europe in the fight against cancer. The Ulster Cancer foundation provides the secretariat for the All Party Group on Cancer. I am pleased that five members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and two Members of the European Parliament were able to attend the meeting to hear about ECL’s activities in the European Partnership for Action Against Cancer, the MEPs Against Cancer and the Patient Support Working Group.
“There was a lot of interest from the MLAs about benchmarking and the costs of cancer treatment outside of the UK . I am concerned that the best treatments are often prohibitively expensive here in the North of Ireland. A follow up meeting is planned in the European Parliament with the APCG to discuss cancer in Northern Ireland and its place in Europe.” concluded Mr Ó hOisín.
“This meeting was the first of its kind to link European MAC group and national level all party groups in cancer.”
