Workers’ Union NIPSA have voiced their concerns about proposals which would see the closure of the children’s unit at Racecourse Road.
On Friday, the Western Trust announced that they have launched a consultation into the proposed closure of the facility - which would be mitigated by an increased focus on foster care in the city.
A consultation on the proposals, which were revealed to staff on Thursday, will run for 12 weeks until January 29 of next year.
However, Alan Law of NIPSA said: “NIPSA is horrified that we are once again the Western HSC Trust has announced plans to close another Children’s home in Derry.
“Staff who have given dedicated service to the Trust over many decades deserve better. It is a devastating blow for the committed professionals who provide care and a home for some of the most vulnerable children in our society.
“The Trust has advised NIPSA that they intend to reinvest entirely all expenditure related to the closure of this unit in developing and supporting foster care placements.
“This commitment is welcomed, however, NIPSA is of the view that service developments should not be funded by the closure of other parts of the Trust. The Trust will now commence a consultation on these plans and has made a commitment to staff that there will be no compulsory redundancies.”
nformation on the proposal and on how to respond can be downloaded from the Western Trust’s website www.westerntrust.hscni.net by clicking on ‘Involving You’ and ‘Consultations’.
