Pat Ramsey, SDLP MLA for Foyle has asked Derry Journal readers to sit down and discuss the delicate issue of organ donation.
Mr. Ramsey, vice-chair of the NI Assembly All Party Group on Organ Donation, has urged people to avail of the opportunity to save a life or indeed lives when the time comes.
An intensive one week campaign has earmarked today as Organ Donation Discussion Day.
Discussion Day is supported by several leading charities such as Opt For Life, Public Health Agency, British Heart Foundation, BMA and Aiken PR.They are highlighting the need for the public to discuss their views on organ donation with their families.
Mr. Ramsey said: “Please let your family know what you would like to do when the time comes. Consider how one donor can save many lives. The issue of organ donation leads to the saving of many lives.
“It is the duty of the All Party Group to promote and advance the cause of organ donation and maximise the number of donors on the organ donation register.
“This is something we are committed to doing however the real work must be done in conversation with your loved ones. A tough conversation now will allow gift your loved ones the freedom to carry out your wishes when the time comes. This is not a morbid subject but very much a conversation about saving lives.”
Social media will play an integral role with families being encouraged to share that they have had the conversation and calling on others to do the same by posting their pictures and using the hashtag #Dec11Tellyourlovedones.
