SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has welcomed news specialist nurses are to be employed at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry to treat patients who have Diabetes.

Health Minister Edwin Poots confirmed plans were “being progressed” to create two further part-time diabetic nurse specialists at the hospital.

Mr Ramsey, who is chair of the Assembly All Party Group on Diabetes said: “We know there are more than 1,000 children and young people under the age of 17 diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and more than 100 new diagnoses are expected each year if the current trend continues – four per cent of the local population now has a diagnosis of Diabetes.

“Awareness is key to educating people about the symptoms of Diabetes and, most importantly, early diagnosis with investment in self-management programmes to ensure people avoid complications later in life. There is no doubt the appointment of specialist diabetic nurses at Altnagelvin will have a positive impact.”
