One of the Ulster Unionist Party’s most senior figures has resigned over the decision to shelve plans to site a regional cancer care unit at Altnagelvin.

The party’s deputy chair, Derry school teacher Terry Wright , quit after saying the decision has tested his loyalty to the party.

“The decision, which I hope even now can be reversed, is clearly symptomatic of the erratic workings of an assembly that is not working as envisaged,” he said.
