Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the announcement that plain packaging for tobacco products will be introduced in the North.
Speaking after the announcement from Health Minister Jim Wells, Ms Anderson said:
“International examples have shown that introducing plain packaging can help prevent young people from taking up smoking.
“Plain packaging contributes to removing the temptation on young people to take up this deadly habit.
“Cigarette packaging is one of the last promotional devices available to the tobacco industry to entice new smokers and efforts to remove that are welcome.
“The fact the North will be brought into line with other jurisdictions by May 2016 is also welcome and I look forward to the implementation of this announcement.”
