Construction work has started on a new multi storey car park at Altnagelvin Hospital.
The contract, which has been awarded to McLaughlin and Harvey Ltd., is valued at £4.4 million.
It’s understood work will be completed by the end of August 2015.
This project is part of the new North Wing development for the hospital which will deliver six new inpatient ward areas and a new main entrance.
The site for the new North Wing is currently a car park located close to the hospital tower block.
The new multi storey facility will provide replacement parking spaces for those lost as a result of the North Wing development. The location for the new multi storey building is the existing outpatients’ car park area of the hospital.
Trust Chief Executive Elaine Way says: “When complete, the new facility will enable work to commence on a major upgrade of accommodation for all of the services currently located in the 50 year old tower block. A particular effort has been made to deliver a phased approach to the project to ensure safe continuation of services on the hospital site at all times.”
To enable construction of the new multi storey building, the current outpatients’ car park at Altnagelvin Hospital will now close. Additional parking spaces have been provided in other areas of the hospital site to replace the spaces lost. These spaces will be available until the new multi storey building is opened.
