Hopes for £400K road scheme

Local politicians have been calling for action at the junction of the Greystone Road and the Broad Road for several years.

Traffic on the busy Broad Road can leave drivers waiting to exit the Greystone Road for some time, causing lengthy queues.

There have also been a number of accidents at the spot.

Councillors in the town have previously expressed fears someone will be seriously injured, or worse.

Speaking at the monthly meeting of Causeway Coast and Glens Council on Tuesday, Deidre Mackle, divisional manager from the Department of Infrastructure said the scheme had been developing for a while and is one the department is “very keen to deliver”.

The Northern Division annual report for 2016/2017 stated: “It is proposed to provide a roundabout at this junction to address a significant collision history along with peak time queuing and delays out of Greystone Road. Detailed design has been completed and the necessary land acquired. Subject to the availability of finance it is proposed to take this scheme forward to construction later this financial year.”

DUP Councillor Alan Robinson said while “there is still some distance to travel and heavy lifting to do to get it over the line, it will be a good day when we get the diggers on site”.

Sinn Fein Councillor Brenda Chivers said anyone who uses the junction knows “it can take five to 10 minutes to get out”.

Colr. Chivers said she hoped the roundabout scheme would be provided “sooner rather than later”.
