A PSNI recruitment that had been scheduled to take place in the Waterfoot Hotel in Derry on Saturday October 17 will not go ahead.

The decision to cancel the event was made by owner of the hotel and local business man, Garvan O’Doherty.

Mr. O’Doherty said he was putting the safety of his staff and customers first by cancelling the event.

The recruitment session had been due to take place at the hotel on Saturday but the PSNI decided to reschedule the event as they feared a protest planned by Republican Network for Unity (R.N.U.) had the potential to interfere with a wedding that was due to take place at the hotel at the same time.

The hotel was also evacuated on Friday when police received reports that a suspicious device had been planted nearby.

A device that was later discovered in the grounds of the hotel was later described by police as “viable”.

Dissident republicans targeted the Everglades Hotel with a fire bomb in May 2014 after a PSNI recruitment event was hosted there.
