'˜Inappropriate objects' in drains led to sewage eruption

Some of the raw sewage which erupted after heavy rainfall on Friday morning.

The sewerage eruption occurred close to Linsfort Drive and Aranmore Avenue of Creggan in the early hours of Friday morning following heavy rainfall overnight.

Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell made contact with NI Water and asked them to come to the scene and deal with the problem.

Speaking about the issue, Councillor Campbell said: “I got reports from residents of raw sewage at the junction of Aranmore Ave and Linsfort Drive in Creggan.

“It happened after a heavy deluge of rain earlier in the day.

“I spoke to NI Water and a contractor to deal with it and clean the area up.”

A spokesperson for NI Water said they attended the scene and took action to remedy the situation.

She said: “NI Water can confirm there was an incident of out of sewer flooding. The incident was a result of a blockage caused by inappropriate items.

“NI Water attended the site Friday, cleared the blockage and carried out a clean-up of the area.”

She also advised: “Inappropriate items which should never be flushed include wet wipes (including flushable) cotton wool, sanitary items and cotton buds; Bin it, don’t flush it.”
